The motif of the boat is at the center of the first major retrospective of the Leipzig painter Doris Ziegler (*1949). In her work it appears as an existential symbol for a permanent transition with an uncertain destination. On the one hand, in Doris Ziegler's work it is connected with social conditions - the painting "Boot II" (1988), for example, with a view to the agony of the late GDR, illustrates the rampant loss of meaning on board as well as the immobility of an ossified society. On the other hand, the boat serves the painter as a symbol of her path as an artist - this becomes clear, for example, in one of the most recent works in the Zwickau exhibition, the painting "Boot III" (2022).
